Survivor's Story
How one man's unexpected diagnosis became the turning point that transformed his health, his priorities, and his purpose.
THE FIRST SIGN
It started with something easy to dismiss — a small spot of blood on his shirt after a day working in the yard. Eric assumed he'd scratched himself without realizing it. But when a second spot appeared the next day on a different shirt, with still no visible scratch or wound to explain it, concern began to quietly grow.
EARLY REASSURANCE
A doctor attributed the bleeding to "some form of trauma" to the chest and predicted it would resolve on its own. It did. Life went on. But the following year, during a workout, Eric was brought to his knees by a sharp, excruciating chest pain. This time, instead of a mystery stain, he found something more alarming: a lump.
THE DIAGNOSIS
Medical examinations confirmed what no one wants to hear. Eric had cancer. A second opinion left no room for doubt — and with it came a treatment plan: a radical mastectomy, followed by reconstructive surgery, and six months of chemotherapy.
THE WEIGHT OF IT ALL
The questions that follow a cancer diagnosis are profound and relentless. Would he see his children's next birthdays? Celebrate another anniversary? With two young children — ages 13 months and 3 years old — a mortgage, car payments, and a body fighting to heal, the pressure was immense. Eric's spouse stepped forward to support the family financially while also caring for him through treatment.
FINDING THE MEANING OF FIGHT
Through the nausea, the fatigue, and the financial strain, something unexpected began to emerge. Time — once taken for granted — became irreplaceable. Family, friendships, spirituality, and health took on new weight. Eric began to see the experience not just as a battle, but as an invitation to build a better life.
"Cancer has been a detour, but not the end of the road. I feel as though I have been given a second chance — to enjoy my life and to make it better, spiritually, physically, and mentally."
— Eric
Eric didn't just survive cancer — he used it as a catalyst for growth across twelve dimensions of life that rarely get the attention they deserve:
